Meagre (Argyrosomus regius)

The meagre is a solitary carnivore living in the pelagic and coastal zone of the north-eastern Atlantic ocean and the Mediterranean sea.

This is a highly vulnerable species, with aquaculture in its infancy and confined to the Mediterranean basin. It displays one clear seasonal spawning peak, during the spring or summer, the timing of which depends upon the localisation (earlier in the year further south in its range).

Highly prized for the quality of its flesh, this species reaches a size of up to 2m in length and 50kg in weight.

The film above shows a group of broodstock meagre, at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) in Greece. This film was produced by Constantinos Mylonas.
