Shi Drum (Umbrina cirrosa)

© HCMR
This film shows a Shi Drum being stripped of spawn in order to carry out in-vitro fertilisation. These images were produced by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) in Greece, by Constantinos Mylonas.

The Shi Drum belongs to the Scianidae family and is a dermsal marine species. It is found in the Eastern Atlantic from the Bay of Biscay and Gibraltar to southern Morocco, and also in the Mediterranean, Black and Azoz Seas. This species displays one clear seasonal spawning peak per year, between March and August in the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
