Northern Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus)

This film, showing a broodstock group of Northern bluefin tuna, was produced by Constantinos Mylonas of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) in Greece.

The Northern bluefin tuna is native to the western and eastern Atlantic ocean, as well as the Mediterranean and Black seas. Critically endangered in the wild, having declined by nearly 90% due to overfishing since the 1970's, it is now commercially cultivated off the Japanese coast.

This species can live for up to 30 years, displaying slow growth and late sexual maturity.
