Endocrine disruptors

Technical factsheet on endocrine disruptors

This section explains what endocrine disruptors are, how they act and the effect that they have on living organisms such as fish.

Fish are particularly affected by endocrine disrupting chemicals because aquatic environments concentrate chemicals (they serve as a receiving environment for many industrial discharges, either directly or indirectly). In addition, in many fish species, sexual differentiation is strongly regulated by hormonal and environmental factors (as opposed to genetics) that are still poorly understood.
