Fish represent a very large group (25000 species) that includes both ancient and modern species. It is thus not surprising that they display great diversity in their lifecyles, strategies of reproduction and development phases. Representative species are studied in order to understand the fundamentals of reproduction and also to improve sustainable production of domesticated stocks and safeguard dwindling wild populations.

This section provides information on the beginnings of fish domestication and the different systems of fish farming currently in practice. The diversity of fish lifecycles and their strategies of reproduction are presented, with special attention given to the key farmed species, laboratory models and threatened species.
