Description: The aims of the FAO Fisheries & Aquaculture department are: to facilitate and secure the long-term sustainable development and utilisation of the world's fisheries and aquaculture; to provide technical assistance in all aspects of fisheries and aquaculture management and development; to promote policies and strategies aiming at sustainable and responsible development of fisheries and aquaculture in inland and marine waters (by providing discussion fora, information, legal and policy frameworks, codes and guidelines, options for strategies, scientific advice and training materials).

The OECD is one of the world's largest and most reliable sources of comparable statistics and economic and social data. As well as collecting data, the OECD monitors trends, analyses and forecasts economic developments and researches social changes or evolving patterns in trade, the environment, agriculture, technology, taxation etc.

Description:  UNESCO promotes international cooperation amongst its member states in the fields of education, science, culture and communication. Goals include helping countries implement a national strategy for sustainable development by 2005, to reverse current trends in the loss of environmental resources by 2015. Since its inception, UNESCO has developed several international programmes to better assess and manage the earth's resources. The organisation also helps reinforce the capacities of developing countries in the sciences, engineering and technology.

Description: The ICES coordinates and promotes marine research in the North Atlantic. It provides a meeting point for a community of more than 1600 marine scientists from 20 countries around the North Atlantic.  Scientists working through ICES gather information about the marine ecosystem, which as well as filling gaps in existing knowledge is developed into unbiased non-political advice to help manage the North Atlantic ocean and adjacent seas.

Description: The NAFO is an intergovernmental fisheries science and management body. Their overal objective is to contribute through consultation and cooperation to the optimum utilisation, rational management and conservation of the fishery resources of the convention area.

Description: Independent international organisation whose remit is to assist the development of fisheries in Central and Eastern Europe. The focus is on trade and marketing, processing and aquaculture.

Description: The mission of the World Fish Center is to reduce poverty and hunger by improving fisheries and aquaculture. It is an international non-profit, non-governmental organisation working in partnership with a wide range of government and non-government agencies at regional, national and local levels in the developing world and with advanced research institutes worldwide. Research-for-development is carried out to improve small-scale fisheries and aquaculture. Key competencies are in policy economics and social sciences, natural resource management, aquaculture and genetic improvement.

The Union has helped over 75 countries to prepare and implement national conservation and biodiversity strategies.

Description: A non-profit making association, whose objective is to gather public and private partners involved in water resource protection and management in France, Europe and world-wide.  These partners include ministries, universities, water suppliers, professional associations and many more.
